Understanding Pool Diverter Valves

A diverter valve controls the direction of water flow through your pool's plumbing system. Unlike a ball valve that simply opens or closes a line, a diverter valve redirects water between two or more paths — making it essential for pools with multiple suction or return lines, spa spillovers, water features, or separate equipment runs.

2-way diverter valves handle a single flow path and are typically used to blend or redirect water between two lines. 3-way valves add a third port, allowing water to be split or fully redirected between multiple destinations. Most residential pools use 1.5" or 2" valves, so confirming your pipe size before ordering is the most important step in finding the right fit.

Choosing and Maintaining Your Diverter Valve

Diverter valves take a lot of abuse — constant water pressure, chemical exposure, and seasonal temperature swings all wear on the internal components over time. The most common failure points are the o-rings and the handle or actuator mechanism. In many cases a leaking or stiff diverter valve can be rebuilt with a simple o-ring kit rather than a full replacement, which is worth attempting before buying a new valve.

When selecting a replacement, match the port size, number of ports, and valve body style to your existing plumbing. Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy all make quality diverter valves with good parts availability — sticking with a major brand makes future repairs easier. If your valve is automated, confirm compatibility with your automation system before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a 2-way and 3-way pool diverter valve?
A 2-way diverter valve has two ports and controls flow between two lines, either blending or fully redirecting water. A 3-way valve has three ports and allows water to be split or redirected between multiple destinations such as a pool, spa, or water feature. The right choice depends on your plumbing layout and how many lines you need to control.
How do I know what size diverter valve I need?
Measure your existing pipe diameter - most residential pools use 1.5 inch or 2 inch plumbing. The valve port size must match your pipe size for a proper fit. If you are replacing an existing valve, check the label or markings on the old valve for the size and model number.
Why is my pool diverter valve leaking?
Most diverter valve leaks are caused by worn or damaged o-rings. In many cases the valve can be rebuilt with a replacement o-ring kit rather than a full valve replacement. If the valve body itself is cracked or the ports are damaged, a full replacement is necessary. Browse our pool plumbing supplies for compatible parts and replacements.
Can I automate my pool diverter valve?
Yes - most major brands offer actuator-compatible diverter valves that can be connected to pool automation systems like Pentair IntelliConnect, Hayward OmniLogic, or Jandy iAquaLink. Confirm that the valve and actuator are compatible with your automation system before purchasing.
How often should I replace my pool diverter valve?
A quality diverter valve can last 10 years or more with proper maintenance. Regular lubrication of the o-rings with a silicone-based lubricant helps extend valve life. If the valve becomes difficult to turn, starts leaking, or the handle breaks, it is time to either rebuild or replace it.
