Pea Gravel is essential to most sand filters as it prevents channelling. Pea gravel is typically used at the bottom of the filter to cover the laterals, and the sand or glass 'bed' is placed overtop. Make sure to consult the manufacturer specifications unique to your filter.

What is the purpose of pea gravel?

The primary purpose is to prevent chanelling within sand filters. Without it, water will create 'channels' through the sand bed from top to bottom, effectively bypassing the filtering process. Pea gravel will typically cover the lower laterals and force the water to actually filter through the sand bed.

Do all sand filters need pea gravel?

Ultimately, this depends on the exact model of filter you have. On your sand filter, you will see the manufacturers' recommendations for media required. Smaller, residential filters may not call for pea gravel, but always consult your filters' specifications.

Pea Gravel for Sand Filters

Fast shipping and fair price! I filled the filter housing with the quartz pea gravel to about 1/2”-1” above the laterals. I then used ZeoSand to fill the rest of the filter. So far it seems to working much better than the regular sand only setup before. Only having to backwash every 2-3 weeks vs weekly like before. The quartz pea gravel also does not react with any of the pool chemicals like regular pea gravel would.
