Choosing the Right Replacement Skimmer
For in-ground pools, finding the right replacement skimmer comes down to four things: plumbing connection size (1.5" or 2"), port type (slip or threaded FIP), skimmer opening size (standard or wide-mouth), and whether the existing deck collar can be reused. Most modern in-ground skimmers use a 2" connection, but older pools — particularly those built before the 1990s — may have 1.5" plumbing. Getting the connection size wrong means replumbing, so it's worth confirming before ordering.
Hayward's Auto-Skim line covers the widest range of in-ground applications, with models for concrete, gunite, and vinyl liner pools in both standard and wide-mouth configurations. Pentair's Bermuda and Sta-Rite U-3 series are the most common Pentair skimmers in existing installations and are direct replacements for pools originally built with those units. CMP skimmers are a reliable compatible option that fit a broad range of plumbing configurations and are a practical choice when the original brand is no longer available or cost is a factor.
For above-ground pools, Hayward's Dyna-Skim series is the most widely used option and fits the majority of above-ground pool walls with standard wall cutouts. Above-ground skimmer replacement is generally simpler than in-ground since there's no deck work involved.
