Hayward Universal H-Series Gas Heaters
The Hayward Universal H-Series is one of the most widely installed gas heaters in the residential pool market, and for good reason — it's available in natural gas and propane, covers a BTU range from 150,000 up to 400,000, and is designed to fit cleanly on new builds and retrofit pads alike. The forced draft combustion system moves air through the chamber at a controlled rate, eliminating the need for a high-wind stack and making roof or enclosed equipment pad installs more straightforward.
Every H-Series unit ships standard with a cupro-nickel heat exchanger, which is a meaningful spec. Cupro-nickel handles corrosion and erosion significantly better than standard copper in saltwater environments, and Hayward's "Totally Managed Flow" design keeps water velocity consistent across all heat exchanger tubes — reducing hot spots and extending exchanger life. This makes the H-Series a reliable choice for salt pools without needing to spec an upgrade option.
The LED control panel includes digital temperature readout and onboard self-diagnostics, which speeds up troubleshooting on service calls. The heater is compatible with OmniLogic and OmniPL automation systems, and meets low-NOx emissions standards including SCAQMD requirements for California installs.
For sizing, a general rule of thumb is 50,000 BTU per 10,000 gallons as a starting point, adjusted for climate, desired temperature rise, and whether the pool is covered. Pools in colder climates or without covers will need to size up. Replacement parts for the H-Series — heat exchangers, gas valves, ignitors, headers, and control boards — are broadly available as genuine Hayward OEM components.
