Hayward Salt Cell Models — Which One Do You Have?

Hayward's salt chlorination lineup covers three main product lines. The AquaRite is the most common in-ground system — it uses a TurboCell (T-CELL-3, T-CELL-9, or T-CELL-15) paired with a control unit or power center. The cell rating corresponds to pool size: the T-CELL-3 covers pools up to 15,000 gallons, the T-CELL-9 up to 25,000 gallons, and the T-CELL-15 up to 40,000 gallons. When replacing a TurboCell, matching the pool size to the correct cell capacity is important — undersizing a cell for the pool volume puts the cell under constant strain and shortens its lifespan.

The AquaTrol is Hayward's above-ground salt system, available in two versions: the AQ-TROL-RJ for return-jet plumbing and the AQ-TROL-HP for hose-end connections. Both are complete systems that include the control unit and cell. The Salt & Swim 3C is an older above-ground system that uses the W3SAS-CELL replacement cell and W3SAS-PRO power supply — still a widely installed system with full parts availability here.

If you're unsure which system you have, the model number is printed on the label of your existing control unit or cell body.

Hayward Salt System Components Beyond the Cell

A Hayward salt system is more than just the TurboCell — several supporting components are equally critical to reliable operation. The control unit (GLX-CTL-RITE) manages chlorine output percentage and displays system status. The flow switch (GLX-FLO-25) prevents the cell from running without adequate water flow, which is one of the most common causes of premature cell failure. If your system is showing a "no flow" error and your pump and filter are operating normally, the flow switch is the first thing to check.

The GLX-CELL-UNION union assembly connects the TurboCell to your plumbing and is a common source of leaks as O-rings age — replacement is straightforward and inexpensive. The GLX-XFMR transformer powers the control unit and is occasionally the cause of a completely unresponsive system when other components check out fine. For winterization, Hayward's GLX-CELL-PIPE dummy cell placeholder protects your plumbing and control unit while the TurboCell is removed for off-season storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Hayward TurboCell do I need?
Hayward TurboCells are rated by pool size: the T-CELL-3 is for pools up to 15,000 gallons, the T-CELL-9 for pools up to 25,000 gallons, and the T-CELL-15 for pools up to 40,000 gallons. Always match the cell to your actual pool volume — running an undersized cell shortens its lifespan significantly.
What is the difference between the Hayward AquaRite and AquaTrol?
The AquaRite is Hayward's in-ground salt chlorination system, using a TurboCell installed inline on your return plumbing. The AquaTrol is designed for above-ground pools and comes in two versions — the AQ-TROL-RJ for return-jet plumbing and the AQ-TROL-HP for hose-end connections. The two systems use different cells and control units and are not interchangeable.
Why is my Hayward AquaRite showing a 'no flow' error?
A no flow error means the system is not detecting adequate water movement through the cell. Start by checking your pump, filter cleanliness, and any valves in the line. If flow is confirmed and the error persists, the GLX-FLO-25 flow switch is likely the cause and is the most common component to fail in this scenario.
How do I winterize my Hayward TurboCell?
Remove the TurboCell, clean it with a diluted acid solution, rinse thoroughly, and store it in a dry location. Install a Hayward GLX-CELL-PIPE dummy cell placeholder in the cell housing to protect your plumbing and control unit over the winter. Reinstall the TurboCell when you open the pool in spring.
Where can I find other brands of replacement salt cells?
EZ Pools carries replacement salt cells for Pentair IntelliChlor, Jandy TruClear, Zodiac, and other brands in our salt water pool systems collection.
